Your Cremation Options

Cremation is a process that prepares human remains for final disposition. After the cremation, you will have to decide whether you will...

  • Inter the cremated remains on a family plot
  • Entomb the cremated remains in a niche in a cemetery columbarium
  • Scatter the cremated remains at sea or over land
  • Keep the cremated remains at home

Many people are under the impression that once they sign a cremation authorization the decision-making process is over. This is simply not the case.

When someone dies you must ALWAYS choose a disposition of the whole body or the cremated remains. A service prior to, or one after after the burial or cremation is an option; you are not obligated to arrange any type of service that honors the life of someone who has died.

Since CremationFinder.com focuses on cremation only, let's look at the three options you have when planning a cremation service:

Direct Cremation

Direct cremation is generally the least expensive service offered by a cremation provider.

Direct cremation involves transferring the decedent from the place of death to the funeral home, placement of the body in an alternative container (a casket is NOT REQUIRED for direct cremation), and once all of the cremation documents have been signed and cremation approved by either the coroner or medical examiner, the body is transported to the crematory for cremation.

Direct Cremation With A Memorial Service

This type of service involves a DIRECT CREMATION followed by a gathering of family and friends after the cremation. The body is NOT PRESENT for a memorial service.

A memorial service can be held at a funeral home, your home, at a hotel, or at the decedent's house of worship (if the decedent was Catholic, this would be referred to as a memorial mass).

Full Service Funeral Followed By Cremation

Quite simply, this service involves everything normally selected for a traditional burial service -- casket selection, visitation period, service at either the funeral home or house of worship -- only instead of the funeral procession going to a cemetery for a ground burial committal service or entombment, mourners would go to a crematory where final words would be spoken.

If you have questions about your cremation options, please consult with one of the licensed cremation providers who advertise their services on CremationFinder.com.

Honorably discharged veterans who served in the United States Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Navy, or Marines may be entitled to special benefits payable by the federal, state, county, or local goverment. Please have the veteran's DD-214 available and consult with your cremation service provider for details.
